The trick with carving tools is to have a tool shaped the way you want the cut to be shaped. In other words, don't try to make a curved shape with a straight edged chisel or vice versa. Professional carvers, therefore, sometimes have hundreds of chisels, all of different shapes, so they can choose just the right one. But that is expensive, so for a beginner the best thing to do is get a set of 6, 12 or more to learn with. Then, add more if you need them as you continue with carving.

The Woodcraft printed catalogue has the widest selection of carving chisel shapes that I have seen, and the catalogue has good pictures of the shapes so you can see what you are buying. When you need a carving chisel of a certain shape, get that catalogue and pick what you need. If you are just starting, consider one of the sets shown below to start you off.
