Chisels

Scroll down to see the chisels for sale.

There are many different kinds of chisels, but I've always been happy with my simple set of Marples bench chisels. Japanese laminated chisels will hold a sharp edge longer, but they are very pricey. I'd consider them if I was using chisels all day for careful joinery, but generally I just use chisels for occasional cleaning up and adjustment so plain tool steel is fine with me. Heavy mortising chisels are made to take a lot of heavy hammering, but regular bench chisels will take the occasional banging I do on them and pop up smiling. Again, if I was doing hand mortising all day I'd get a set of mortising chisels, but until then my bench chisels will do fine.

You'll get by with just four chisels as shown in the first set here. But it is very convenient to have a range of sizes to choose from, so if you can afford it consider a set with more widths.
