Here's a quick look at some drill bit types you'll commonly use in your shop:

Tapered bits with countersink. For predrilling for screws. Taper conforms to the shape of the screw for best mechanical grip of screw. Countersink on bit eliminates the need for a separate operation to cut countersinks. Use different diameter bits with different screw diameters.
Brad point bits. For boring at 90o into wood. Brad points cut a clean hole and reduce wandering. Use for dowel holes and other applications.
Forstner bits. For boring into wood at an angle. Their design allows them to enter wood at an angle without deflecting. Should be used in a drill press.
Auger bits. Traditional spiral bits for a hand brace. Many are designed for use with electic drills now. Useful for deep holes that don't need to be precise.
Spade bits. Inexpensive bits for punching not-so-accurate holes in wood.
Metal drilling bit index. Choice of sizes for boring holes in metal.

For driving screws into the tapered holes you bore with tapered bits, place a magnetic bit tip holder in your variable speed trigger drill and put the appropriate bit tip in the holder. For more info on electric hand drills click here.
