Handplanes

Before the machine age, hand planes were the only means of cleaning, truing and smoothing straight and flat boards. We do most of this with machines now, but hand planes still do some things better than machines.

Here's a look at common hand planes and their uses in a machine shop:

Stanley 12-247 1-5/8" Adjustable Block Plane.
Inexpensive block plane. Not as easy to adjust as block planes costing more.
Stanley 12-920 1-5/8" Block Plane.
Medium range block plane. Good depth of cut adjustment.

Record 095 Block Plane.
High range block plane. Three adjustments. Beautiful tool.
Stanley 12-204 2" Smooth Plane.
Good basic smoothing plane.

Stanley 12-205 2" Jack Plane.
Good basic jack plane.
Stanley 12-975 Contractor Grade Adjustable Bullnose Rabbet Plane.
For trimming in rabbets and other close quarters.
Stanley 21-399 Surform Pocket Plane
Okay so a surform isn't a hand plane. They are, however, very handy for tapering drywall or smoothing auto body filler.
Miniature Hand Planes. For small work, or work in tight spaces.
Radii Planes. Quickly round over or chamfer any straight edge. Stanley #90 and #92 Bullnose Planes. Attractive, serious planes for rabbet work.
