A radial arm saw is not a necessity in a small woodworking shop, but it is one of the greatest conveniences. It makes cut off a breeze instead of a pain in the neck, particularly with long stock. Even with short pieces though, it makes the cut off process much faster, easier and accurate. As well, there are various dado setups and whatnot that are easier on a radial arm table, because you drag the saw across the work rather than vice versa. The smaller, lighter duty radial arms are all you'll ever need in a small shop. Only consider a larger one if you know you will need to cut off 2x and larger stock on a regular basis.
